Somaliland Review of Deyr 2024, Status of Jilaal, and GU 2025 Outlook

Varying rainfall patterns were observed across Somaliland during the Deyr 2024 season with notable differences in total rainfall amounts and their impacts on the environment, agriculture, and livelihoods. The season began with peak in October, tapering off in December in many regions. While some areas experienced favorable total rainfall, others recorded significantly lower totals compared to the Long-Term Mean (LTM). Hargeisa experienced substantial rainfall, reaching 6 times the (LTM). The onset of Dayr rains occurred in early October the rains initially spread across central and eastern parts of Somaliland but ended in sharp early December, with no rainfall recorded in December. In most regions observed more than 30 consecutive dry days between November 1st and December 31st, 2024.

Somaliland Weekly Weather Forecast - 04 to 10 December 2024

Rainfall Forecast (04-10 December 2024) For the upcoming week, the NOAA-NCEP GFS model forecasts mostly dry conditions in most parts of Somaliland with chances of isolated light rainfall expected in eastern and northern parts of Lasqorey district, northern and eastern parts of Taleex district and northwestern parts of Berbera district. While these areas are likely to receive cumulative rainfall of up to 10 mm, most of the country will remain dry. Light rainfall between 5.0 mm to 10.0 mm is expected in the northwestern parts of Berbera district in Saaxil region, northern and eastern parts of Taleex district in Sool region and eastern and northern parts of Laasqorey in Sanaag region. Dry conditions are expected likely to prevail in other parts of Somaliland.

Rainfall Forecast (27 November – 2 December 2024) According to NOAA-NCEP GFS, the forecast for the coming one week indicates mostly dry conditions in most regions of Somaliland including Maroodijeex, Awdal, Togdheer, Sanaag, Saaxil and Sool. The dry conditions are likely to be attributed to the forward propagation of the Madden Julian Oscillation index away from the Greater Horn of Africa region and western Indian Ocean.

SOMALILAND WEEKLY WEATHER FORECAST 20 TO 26 NOVEMBER 2024

According to NOAA-NCEP GFS, most parts of Somaliland are likely to experience light rainfall, with chances of moderate rains over Burco, Sheikh, Ceel Afweyn, and Oodweyne districts. In contrast, the eastern regions, including Xudun, Taleex, Laas Caanood districts in Sool region, Ceerigabo district in Sanaag region, and parts of Hargeysa and Gabiley districts in Maroodijeex are anticipated to remain dry. Moderate Rainfall (40.0 mm to 50.0 mm) is anticipated over the central parts of Burco and Oodweyne districts in Togdheer region. In Awdal region, the northwestern parts of Lughaye and western parts of Borama districts are likely to experience moderate rainfall. Furthermore, moderate rainfall is expected in the eastern parts of Hargeisa along its border with Oodweyne in Maroodijeex region, the western and eastern parts of Ceerigaabo district in Sanaag region, and Sheikh district in Saaxil region. Light Rainfall (2.0 mm to 30.0 mm) is likely across most parts of the country, including Hargeisa and Gabiley districts in Maroodijeex region, Baki, Borama, Zeylac, and southern parts of Lughaye districts in Awdal region. Light rainfall is also forecasted for Taleex and Xudun districts in Sool region, Berbera district in Saaxil region, Buhoodle district in Togdheer region, Caynabo and Lascanod districts in Sool region, as well as Ceerigaabo and Ceel Afweyn districts in Sanaag region. Dry Conditions are likely over eastern and western parts of Laas Caanood, Xudun, and Taleex districts, eastern parts of Caynabo district, southern parts of Ceerigaabo and Laasqoray districts in Sanaag region. Similarly, dry conditions are expected in the central parts of Gabiley and Hargeisa districts in Maroodijeex region, as well as the southern parts of Zeylac district in Awdal region.

According to NOAA-NCEP GFS, the forecast for the coming one week indicates widespread heavy cumulative rainfall across western parts of Somaliland, apart from a few areas in Lasqorey and Berbera where dry conditions will prevail. Very Heavy cumulative rainfall of up to 250.0 mm is expected over the parts of Wajaale, Gabiley and Dilla with a high risk of flash floods over vulnerable areas. Map 1 shows the spatial distribution of the rainfall forecast.

As the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) shifts further south in October, rains are expected to spread both eastwards and southwards from Somaliland. As the NOAA-NCEP GFS, forecasts mostly dry conditions in most regions of Somaliland including Maroodijeex, Awdal and Saaxil during the upcoming week. Light rainfall of up to 30.0 mm is expected over isolated areas in Ceerigaabo district in Sanaag region, and Laas Canood district in Sool region and southern parts of Burco district in Togdheer region. Although the residual effect of ITCZ is still expected to lead to cloudiness, the rest of Somaliland is expected to be dry.

• Moderate cumulative rainfall between 50.0 mm and 100.0 mm is expected over central parts of Ceerigaabo and Dayaha Districts (Sanaag region) and Boon District (Awdal region). • Light rainfall of between 5.0 mm to 50.0 mm is anticipated over most parts of Somaliland including of Hargeisa, Wajaale, Farawayne, Balligubadle and Gumburuha Districts (Maroodijeex region), southern Burco and Hajisalah Districts (Togdheer region), Taleh, Xudun (Sool region) ,Garadag, western parts of ceel afwayn and laasqorey (Sanaag region), Sheikh and Borama Districts. • Dry conditions are expected in the northern parts of Gebiley, Dilla, Caynabo, Buuhoodle ,Laascanod, Oodweyne, Baki, Xiis , Berbera ,Zeylac, and Lughaye districts including their coastal areas.

This mandate is carried out with the support and expertise of departments specializing in GIS and remote sensing, water resources, land resources, and information management, aiming to benefit end-users.

Our Departments

GIS & Remote Sensing

Possesses the capability to integrate Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) tools, along with conducting field surveys, to gather and analyze data on land resources. These tools generate comprehensive maps with legends delineating various features. Both satellite imagery and aerial photography are employed to evaluate and oversee water, land resources, and infrastructures. IMC merges Remote Sensing technology with traditional field data collection, enhancing the accuracy and depth of analysis and information provided.

Land Resources

Focused on assessing the characteristics of the land, the activities carried out on it and the subsequent effects of these activities. Topics covered include land forms, land cover, land use, soil characteristics, land suitability and land degradation, among others.

Water Resources

Our areas of focus in water include:

  • 1. Providing water information that benefits government and non-governmental agencies and Somaliland citizens
  • 2. Performing water resources research
  • 3. Setting up systems to monitor water resources and climate
  • 4. Providing early warning on natural hazards such as floods and drought

Information Management

Precision, current, and top-notch information plays a crucial role in effectively managing water and land resources over the long term. IMC Somaliland has significantly advanced in enhancing both the volume and quality of foundational data and information related to land and water in Somaliland.
